Despite all that has been achieved in the last 25 years, our job has only just begun. We need your help in order to succeed in making a real difference to the lives of people in rural Africa while simultaneously supporting land restoration and wildlife conservation.

The village of Lillydale has a population of approximately 12,000 people. The population is also very young - 36% is under the age nineteen. Statistics show that even though there is a wide range of socio-economic status within this community, most households are generally poor. Many men migrate for work, and women are expected to care for children and the elderly within their households and wider community. Service delivery in the area is sparse.

Benguerra Island Clinic

Benguerra Island community is made up of three different villages: Chizungune in the north, Bavene closest to andBeyond Benguerra Island Lodge, and Chiringoma in the south. The estimated population of the island is between 1,500 and 2,000 people. With very poor soil structure to support sustainable agricultural activities, the main source of livelihood is fishing and, to a lesser extent, tourism.

KwaZulu Natal (KZN) is home to 19.9% of South Africa’s population, making it the second most populated province, after Gauteng. While the countries 2016 growth in GDP was 0.6%, KZN’s was -0.7%. Bohlabela Craft Centre

The rural community of Welverdiend is situated adjacent to andBeyond Ngala Private Game Reserve and the world famous Kruger National Park. A former homeland area with a population of approximately 12,000 people, Welverdiend is characterized by high levels of unemployment and poverty. Its proximity to a number of Game Reserves means that tourism plays a key role in the employment opportunities and economic activities of the community. However, approximately 34% of the community’s working population is unemployed.

Boithathelo Crèche

Mpumalanga is the fourth smallest province in the country with a population of 3.7 million where 49.3% of the population is male and 50.7% are female. Over four-fifths (84.7%) of the population reside in formal dwellings and 10.9% in informal dwellings. Mpumalanga recorded a (19.5%) proportion of households who reported that their main dwelling was a RDP/government subsidized dwelling.

Chaenda Secondary School

Established in 2007, Chaenda Secondary School provides grades 8–12 level education and lies between the two communities of Endashang’wet and Changarawe. Purposely positioned this way, as neither community had a secondary school, the school's location is a blessing and a curse. While it can in theory serve both communities, it is not close to any of its five feeder primary schools and very few of the learners live close to the school. Located in a remote area away from the rim of the Ngorongoro crater, these communities are off the beaten track, seldom seen and poorly serviced by the government.

CLEF Bursary Fund

The CLEF, which stands for ‘Community Leaders Education Fund’, bursary program was established in South Africa in 1996, firstly in rural KwaZulu Natal, expanding to Mpumalanga in 2000. As Africa Foundation broadened its footprint in East Africa, the CLEF Bursary program was introduced to Tanzania and Kenya in 2014. This year the bursary program was launched in Botswana and Namibia, within rural communities that Africa Foundation, in collaboration with andBeyond, have partnerships with.

Khulani Special School

The Mduku Community is situated approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Hluhluwe. Mduku is hemmed in by andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve to the west and the renowned World Heritage Site of iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly known as the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park) to the east.

Kijini School

Kijini is a small village on Zanzibar Island with approximately 500 households and 3,200 people. Like many villages in rural areas, there is a shortage of facilities, and service delivery is almost non-existent. Kijini has a government-run clinic, with a resident clinician and one school that provides nursery, primary, and secondary education. To date, Africa Foundation has not worked extensively with this community, however we are developing a relationship with the community leadership and have so far assisted with infrastructure at the school.

Huntington community is very close to Sabi Sands Game Reserve in Ehlanzeni District Municipality, Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga. This community has a population of approx. 3,500, living in 827 households. Employment opportunities are extremely limited in the area, outside of working in nearby lodges and informal trading.

Lukungu Primary School

The community of Lukungu is located in Lamadi Ward, on the eastern shores of Lake Victoria in Tanzania. Lukungu has a population of approximately 4,000 people, over 654 households (an average of 6 people per household). Due to the community location, fishing is one of the major economic activities, others include subsistence farming- growing mainly cotton and maize as a staple food, and keeping livestock. Located on the main road, Lukungu is 3 km from the busy trading center of Lamadi which has a population of almost 30,000 people.

Madilika Craft Center

The rural community of Justicia is situated adjacent to the Sabi Sand Reserve and the world famous Kruger National Park in rural Mpumalanga, South Africa. Justicia Community is located in Bushbuckridge Municipality, this name was given because of the large herds of bushbuck found there in the 1880s. The town of Bushbuckridge grew around a trading store that opened in 1884 and has since grown to a community of people.

Mayoka is a rural community in the Manyara District of Tanzania, close to Lake Manyara. The community has a population of around 7,000 people. Mbirikiri Primary School

The community of Mbirikiri is located in the Serengeti District, Mara Region of Tanzania. The community has an approximate population of 2,500 people across 350 households. There is one primary school and no secondary school, although the community has commenced with the construction of one, adding to it as and when funds allow. The main occupation of the community is livestock and subsistence farming, however they are negatively impacted by the roaming of wild animals which disrupt the crops. The community does not have a piped water supply and relies on rainwater and boreholes.

Mbuyutende School

Mbuyutende community is located in the North East of Zanzibar in North “A” District Unguja. There is a population of 3,226 and just one primary school. While the village has electricity, it is not connected to water supply, which is a big challenge for the residents. The nearest clinic is in Kijini, approx. 5km away on dirt road, and offers basic medical care. Employment opportunities in Mbuyutende focus on working within the tourist industry or subsistence fishing.

Mduku Clinic

Mduku is a growing community with a rising population of over 20,000 people, many of whom have moved into the area from more isolated locations. Mduku attracts people because of infrastructure development over recent years - good roads and transport links, a number of good quality Government Schools, including a school for children with special needs, and a 24-hour clinic.

Newington C Home-Based Care Center

Newington C community is located close to Sabi Sands Game Reserve in Ehlanzeni District Municipality, Mpumalanga, South Africa. Newington C is part of the Newington group of villages and is one of the smaller communities in the area. 2016 population statistics indicate 2,134 residents, of which 908 are under 19 years of age. The population is a roughly equal male/female split. Crude death rate in Newington C has increased significantly between 1994 and 2016 – a reflection of the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Ololosokwan Primary School

Ololosokwan is one of the wards in Loliondo division in Ngorongoro District of Tanzania. Ololosokwan ward incorporates several villages, including Ololosokwan, Meirowa, Sero, and Darupoi. Ololosokwan is located just close to Serengeti National Park Northern border, approximately 20 kilometers from andBeyond Kleins Camp. Further north, Ololosokwan village borders the Republic of Kenya’s south border.

Saparingo Primary School

Saparingo Village lies on the top of the escarpment, eight kilometers from Kichwa Tembo lodge. The village has a small population of around 700 people, who live among the wildlife and bush. The hub of most villages is the market-place but, Saparingo is so small that it does not have its own shops, clinics, or secondary school. Its only facility is Saparingo Primary School.

Sexaxa Primary School

Sexaxa is a very small rural village in the Ngamiland District, nineteen kilometers northeast of Maun Airport, Botswana. Close to the Thamalakane River, Sexaxa has an estimated population of 600-900 people and has no real infrastructure. The nearest larger village is Matlapana, roughly five kilometers away.

Zamani Creche

With huge demand for Early Childhood Development facilities, and so few places available in rural South Africa, Zamani Creche was established in Mduku community, KwaZulu Natal in 2012. The crèche began in a small rondavaal, provided by a community member. Very soon, over 40 children were attending the crèche, in the cramped dark room.
